Wiggy in praise of Field Marshal

By Manekshaw Chief Minister

C.V. Wigneswaran was full of praise for Sri Lanka's first Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka for the comments he made at his maiden Parliament address on calling for an investigation the alleged war crimes with international involvement and also for the Field Marshal calling for an investigation into the 'white flag ' issue which is believed to have led to the deaths of scores of LTTE cadres including some of the outfit's key figures who had opted to surrender at the end of the final phase of the war.

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who was a presidential candidate at the 2010 presidential election is now a Cabinet member with the portfolio of Minister of Regional Development.
US General Dwight Eisenhower who was popularly known as 'Ike' after successfully ending the World War II supported by General Douglas Mc Arthur and Britain's Field Marshal Montgomery had contested at the US presidential poll in 1953 and gained an overwhelming victory becoming the 34th President of America.

Dwight Eisenhower remained as President of the United States of America till 1961 and his two consecutive victories at the US Presidential polls had highlighted the gratitude of the Americans for his leadership given in defeating Adolf Hitler and winning the War II.
In 2010, when Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka contested the presidential election, he was even described by the media circles as the 'Ike' of Sri Lanka for contesting the election after successfully defeating the LTTE which had fought a war for three decades in the island.
Northern Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran, who generally makes hard hitting speeches calling for the reduction of military presence in the North, to the surprise of the audience gathered at an event participated by President Maithripala Sirisena to hand over the legal documents to the Internally Displaced Persons who regained their original lands in Valikamam North last week, praised Filed Marshal Fonseka for being supportive of an international investigation into the alleged war crimes during his maiden speech in Parliament.

Presidential
poll in 2010
Wigneswaran also pointed out the support Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka gained very much more than that his contender Mahinda Rajapaksa got from Northern Province at the presidential poll in 2010.

Wigneswaran also said that by not opposing an international investigation into the alleged war crimes, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka had even proved himself a professional soldier. The Chief Minister went on to say that it's because of the professionalism displayed by Field Marshal Fonseka, that the Northerners who generally appreciated professionalism in whatever field had supported him at the 2010 presidential poll.

Moreover, the Northerners who were boycotting the 2005 presidential poll due to the manipulations of the LTTE didn't want to make the same mistake they committed in 2005 and decided to support Field Marshal Fonseka.
If it was not for the manipulations of the LTTE, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who had contested against Rajapaksa at the 2005 poll would have been victorious.

Later on the voters from the North and the East who were awaiting for the right 'horse' had shown their full strength and made President Maithripala Sirisena victorious defeating Mahinda Rajapaksa at the 2016 presidential poll.
Chief Minster Wigneswaran being a Judge of the Supreme Court, during his school days at Royal College, Colombo had been a member of the school's cadet platoon. If the well built Chief Minister with his background as a cadet had joined the Army after his schooling he would even have been a senior officer.

First Civil war
Field Marshal
Field Marshal is the topmost rank in the Army. The internationally renowned Britain's Field Marshal Montgomery and India's Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, had gained their top mostrank in the Army for their illustrious career displaying their leadership qualities. Field Marshal Montgomery was one of the great heroes of World War II. India's Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, played a tremendous role in defeating Pakistan at the Indo-Pakistan war in 1970 and creating a new nation called Bangladesh.
So, the Field Marshals of international repute had engaged in the wars against their enemy countries. Whereas Sri Lanka's Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka could be rated as the first military leader to be adorned with the topmost rank by successfully ending a civil war within his own country.

Now as a Minister, Field Marshal Fonseka in his maiden speech in Parliament, while defending the Army's role at the final phase of the war had mentioned that he was not opposed for an international investigation into the alleged for crimes believed to have been committed during the war. He also said, under his military leadership all operations were carried out in accordance with the laws of war.
Field Marshal's own experience
As the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has been insisting for an international investigation into the alleged war crimes for the investigations to be unbiased, it's again Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who has his own reasons to support an international investigations into the alleged war crimes on the basis of the injustices meted out to him not only by the Judicial system in days of the previous government but also under the Army's Court Martial inquiry on him which had made him live behind bars for two years. While courageously calling for an international investigation into the alleged war crimes Field Marshal Fonseka had also said that anyone found guilty could also be punished.
So, by praising Filed Marshal Fonseka's stance on international investigations, Chief Minister Wigneswaran being a legal luminary has expressed his desire for peace and reconciliation by welcoming the comments of the right thinking people in the South.
